Lithuanian and British art

Ištrauka

Art is the expression of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting. It is universally enjoyed and appreciated and is not limited to one country. Obviously, this means that each and every country can practice and expand whichever type of art they please. So, today I will be talking about Lithuanian and British art and comparing the art of these different, yet so similar countries.

In Britain, the arts are met with a mixture of public apathy and private enthusiasm. Similarly in Lithuania, youngsters display an indifference to art, but while some do genuinely enjoy it, the majority of those who don’t drown out the ones who do. In both countries, art is publically accepted, it is not actively encouraged. In a nutshell, people would much rather stay at home and watch TV than go out and appreciate the arts.

Moreover, London has some of the finest collections of paintings and sculptures in the world, but unfortunately it doesn’t capture the attention of tourist brochures, so they do little to advertise this. In Lithuania, however, tourist brochures boast about the amount of museums we have and the opportunities to visit the various museums to learn about Lithuania’s past and culture.

Fortunately, while it does seem like these two countries are keen on presenting themselves as a nation of philistines, a large number of people enthusiastically devote their time to one or other of the arts. In Britain, thousands of people learn handcrafts, such as pottery, and sometimes sell their work in local craft shops. Similarly in Lithuania, during the Kaziuko Mugė fair, people hit the jackpot by gathering to sell their hand-made goods, such as woven and knitted clothes, utensils, jugs, jewelry and so on.
