Ištrauka

Geometry provides the language to describe the spatial relationships in everyday life. It is the section of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces, and three-dimensional solids. The beginning of geometry is hidden in the times of ancient history, since its origins go back to at least early 3,000 BCE, in Egypt. Later the study of geometry was passed on through different eras, surviving the Ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, and it still continues to flourish today. It is fascinating that the study of geometry has lasted so long and is still being continued (Heilbron).

The first civilization to use geometry was Egypt. Although they were not as advanced as the Babylonians, Greeks, or Romans, they became the first experts in geometry. Back then, Egyptian geometry experts were called "arpedonapti", those who knot ropes. By tightening ropes they drew the most simple geometrical patterns: the straight line and a circle. Simply the tightening of a rope represents a kind of operation whose image is still present in expressions such as “to draw a line” or “to draw a perpendicular line”, the second move made the two points turn around and turned into a a held knot (Giusti). Back then, Egyptians could not even imagine what extent they brought to the development of geometry just by repeating simple moves of patterns that still continue to exist in humans’ daily life.
