Ištrauka

Introduction

In the middle of 20th century the conception of what was called a State has changed. Large empires collapsed and there were more and more nation-states with the wish to create a welfare state. [1] Great Britain and Norway was among these countries. By that time both of them had the same goals – stabilize economy and become a stable and strong welfare state. Surprisingly, two countries with the same wish in 20th century now have totally different models of welfare state. Norway sets very ambitious goals for social policy and is called a redistribution welfare state. It tries to equalize everyone’s opportunities for well-being through a wide range of income redistribution. While Great Britain with its free market system and autonomy of citizens developed liberal model of welfare state. Distinction of welfare state models between these countries is a cause of reforms implemented few decades ago. Qualitative method of path dependency helps to identify key historical processes which influence further development – set it on a particular trajectory.[2] What is happening now can be influence by events in a distant past, so to answer the question why Norway and Great Britain created different welfare state models we need to compare government decisions since the end of World War II.
